Sherry Bassin brings a wealth of experience to the COF Board on a number of fronts. He holds three degrees: a BSc in Pharmacy, an MSc in Hospital Administration and a Juris Doctor of Law. His varied career includes pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy, working in the legal division of Canada’s Food and Drug Directorate and Professor at Durham College. His passion for hockey led him to coaching, then to managing hockey teams in the OHL. Most recently, Mr. Bassin owned the Erie Otters hockey team.
In his hockey career, Mr. Bassin has won at every level of hockey, including the 1993 Memorial Cup with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and two gold medals with the Canadian World Junior Team (1982 and 1985). He is also a two-time recipient of the OHL and CHL Executive-of-the-Year Awards (in 1990-91 while with the Greyhounds and in 2001-02 with the Otters). He also served as a color commentator for CBC Sports in the late-1980's for their World Junior Championship coverage.
Mr. Bassin’s community service work is extensive. He is a Past President and Founding Member of the Whitby Rotary Club, and former President and Chair of the Board of the Durham Symphony Orchestra. He has been recognized by the City of Oshawa as a Citizen of the Year.
Mr. Bassin has had several orthopaedic surgeries (hip and shoulder) and is a strong consumer advocate for the value of orthopaedic surgery and care. He has demonstrated his commitment by hosting and organizing the annual Bad to the Bone golf since 2012, raising funds in support of the COF.
